Suitcases

Cloakroom Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam
December 9, 1999 - February 16, 2000

A cloakroom is a public space within a museum. I was curious how the museum would react to the performance of placing the work in the cloakroom by a group of 40 people, and to the continued presence of the suitcases. The suitcases remained in the cloakroom for more than two months, at which point I phoned the Museum, claiming responsibility for smuggling the ‘sculpture’ into the Museum and announcing my intention to reclaim the suitcases. For this purpose I arranged two taxis and asked two people who had been on the trip to assist me. The event was filmed by a camera crew for the national TV program 'Man Bijt Hond' (Man Bites Dog) and broadcast two days later.
